Ond Vind – “Demo” tape review – July 2020 AB

Ond Vind is a new Swedish band hailing from the port city of Malmö. On the 17th of June they released their debut “Demo” tape (limited to 50 pieces, already sold out by now) via Ropes & Bones, the same label who released Transilvania‘s debut full length, “The Night of Nights“.

If this demo had come out in the beginning of the 80’s, probably it would have scared the shit out of the listeners. Since it surfaced 40 years later, in Anno Bastardi 2020, the 4 tracks are not that scary or never heard of. Instead, they are fast, straight in your face and, above all, they have a “dirty” and primitive sound reminiscent of “Kill’Em All” (“Lust for Torment”), “Show No Mercy”, early Bathory and Tormentor.

Clocking in around 11 minutes, this Demo is extremely enjoyable, full of crazy riffing and pounding drums (check out the blast beats on “Turned to Evil“, they really kick ass!!). The vocals sometimes remind me of Erik Danielsson, especially on the last track, “Power of Iron“, which is not bad at all, considering how much I like Watain.

Ond Vind – Demo Tape

With this tape Ond Vind have not reinvented the wheel but have instead unleashed a mayhemic volley of poisonous arrows that pierce right through your heart. The release is insanely addictive, catchy and as honest as it can be. For someone who has not lived those times in the ’80s (I was just a kid then, living under communism), these 4 tracks take me back in time, back when and where it all started. I would not call this demo Bathory worship, but a mix of very old school speed/black metal with some modern and personal touches.

But enough with the words: grab your leather jackets and put on your bullet belts, strong evil winds are blowing from the cold North. Prepare yourselves for a devastating assault, Ond Vind is here to rock and some heads are gonna roll.

Ond Vind Demo track list:
