NOIRSUAIRE – “Black Flame of Unholy Tradition EP review” – Kaoszophy Productions – November 2024 AB

I fucking love it when this happens and that’s one of the reasons why I worship this underground so much: it just hits you in the face when you expect it the least. It happened to me recently, when I received an email from a French band and its upcoming debut release. Until that moment I haven’t heard anything about them but something in the way they described their stuff instantly triggered my interest.

Noirsuaire is a French band hailing from the Montségur area (you know, that area the Cathars once lived in) and they are a new addition to the scene, having formed only 2 years ago. In 2023 the band has released a 2 track demo tape, “Possessed by a Malignant Lust“, which has since then been repressed several times by various small underground labels (Nachzerer Records, Impure Wedding Productions, Ordine di a Manu Pallida or Svart Hat from Mexico). Pretty impressive for a debut 2 track demo from an unkown band, right?

Earlier this year Noirsuaire has released 2 digital EPs, “Black Flame of Unholy Tradition” and “Revered Pestilence Sessions“, which have been compiled on a CD, “Black Flame of Unholy Tradition“. This EP came out on the 1st of November via the label Kaoszophy Productions. According to the band, “this material must be considered a prelude to the first Noirsuaire album. This version of the EP features the very first Noirsuaire song, “Submit To Pestilence“, in its only and rawest form and “Those Once Revered“, a song which was first intended to end up of the first NOIRSUAIRE album”.

What we deal here with is raw and putrid black metal right from the rotten crypts, from the times when black metal was not polished or clean. The songs are fast and aggressive, with lots of blast beats and vicious, raspy vocals that bite at your throat. The guitars, with their glacial and morbid tone, are the perfect tools to create the melancholic and morbid atmosphere you can easily drown in. Despite the shortness of this release (the intro and the 4 songs last a bit under 18 minutes), The French duo Noirsuaire has created a strong quality black metal EP, which will definitely satisfy those damned souls who still worship the true underground releases.

What I really like the most about this EP is its honesty. You can feel the musicians have put their hearts and souls into these recordings and they played them from the heart, making this EP as authentic and sincere as possible. The band is very careful with its image, sound and visuals, keeping everything to a minimum. Black and white cover and photos, no useless comments or endless “thank you” lists, just raw atmospheric black metal the way it was supposed to be played. I admire this kind of approach and I am very happy when new emerging bands are not afraid to use it. True black metal underground is definitely not for the masses and deserves to remain hidden in the shadows, only to be discovered by those who really want to look for it. Noirsuaire has learned this and this EP is the excellent proof for it.

The band has announced 2 days ago that a new EP, “By the Screams of Porphyric Seraphs“, will be released in December on a limited tape version. Keep an eye on Noirsuaire, this band is definitely worth checking out, their music and releases are indeed a true relic of the past.
