3 years after the release of the excellent “Winds of Misery” demo tape that we have covered here, the Hungarian quartet Mistcavern is back with the long-awaited EP entitled “Into Twilight”. The new material will be released on Good Friday, April the 15th by Iron Bonehead Productions, as a celebration of all things dark and sinister.
Comprised of 4 lengthy tracks, with a duration of almost 26 minutes, the EP basically takes off from where the demo tape ended, submerging you in its murky, suffocating atmosphere right from the very first tunes of the opening track “Towards the Eclipse”.
The sinister feeling that oozes from the songs is mainly given by the majestic keyboards that linger obsessively in the background, like a dark web of hopelessness. The morbid atmosphere is enhanced by Angmar’s chilling vocals, desperate and agonizing as if possessed by a demoniacal presence. The drums are varied, switching from slow tempos to visceral blast beats, without falling into the “speed” trap so many black metal bands use these days. Osseum’s icy guitar riffs, so cold and so sharp, bite hungrily into your senses producing small streaks of blood and nostalgia.

These elements, combined altogether, provide “Into Twilight” with a menacing and disturbing sensation of impending doom, of something profoundly evil which is about to happen. From the very first listen of the EP, it’s obvious that the band has crafted and developed its own style, far away from the restrictions of modern black metal. And that is something extremely hard to find in today’s scene.
Overall, “Into Twilight” is a majestic release which on one hand captures the true essence of a once glorious past and, on the other, manages to interpret it in a very personal and emotional way. The four melancholic tracks on this EP are the perfect night-time soundtrack for those who dream of solitude, darkness and chilling atmospheres. I can only hope that after these two great releases the band will soon deliver its first full length that I’m so eagerly waiting for. But until that moment comes, I invite you to step into the twilight and let Mistcavern’s winds of misery take you.
